The Committee on the
Church and the Metropolitan Community
Report to the Annual Meeting April 24, 2010

The Committee on the Church and the Metropolitan Community (which ought to be renamed) has been actively involved in immigration issues, the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. service, and an emerging area of concern: workers’ rights.  Our primary involvement with immigration has been through The New Sanctuary Movement.  As such we have helped train and involve churches in the ongoing immigration rights work of The New Sanctuary Movement.

The committee was also actively involved in the protests and vigils held to call attention to the plight of Judson Member Jeanne Montrevil, who was detained and held at the Varick Street Detention Center up until his much celebrated release.

This year's MLK service was held at Judson Memorial Church, which co-hosted with Lemuel Haynes Church.  The Rev. Dr. Traci West led a participatory Bible study on the subject of overcoming fear (using the passage in Mark chapter 4 where Jesus calms the storm).  The Bible study was followed by an esteemed collection of panelists representing UCC churches in the Metro Suffolk Association who discussed site-specific fears congregations are facing.  Rev. Jeannette Zaragoza, a new and welcome addition to the Metropolitan Association, graciously served as our worship leader.  Special music was provided by Rev. Cynthia Jackson.  Both Judson and Lemuel Haynes UCC members and clergy are to be commended on their successful collaboration which created a very special day for those who attended.

Respectfully submitted,

Rev. Jennifer Aull and Rev. Tom Martinez
