The sun shone brightly on The Church in Highlands on Saturday, April 25, 2009, as the Metropolitan Association met for its 132nd Annual meeting, led by Moderator Robert Everett. When Registrar David Tucker announced attendance, we were 117 persons from 35 churches; people continued to arrive after this tally.

With the theme Called to be Stewards of God’s Creation, it was a day of celebration. We:

Praised God with Six Gestures of Morning Praise

Honored NY Conference Minister Geoffrey Black who is slated to be elected UCC General Minister and President at General Synod

Adopted a Mission Statement

Applauded three years of inspired leadership by Board President Ruby Wilson

Gave local recognition to Dorothy Gist who will be honored at General Synod as an Honored UCC Lay Woman

Elected and installed new officers

Accepted a healthy financial report from Treasurer Harold Chapman

Honored churches who are “5 for 5” – making contributions to all five UCC special offerings

Gathered in workshops – “Green Faith”, led by Stacy Keneally, “The Story of Stuff” led by Alice Brown, and a tour of the Church of the Highlands community garden led by Melanie Miller

Worshipped God including a stirring sermon by Bob Chase

And, of course, ate.

We Gathered in Workshops to Learn What We Can DO

Our host minister, Melanie Miller, directed us to our three workshops, one of which was a tour of the community garden maintained by The Church of the Highlands.

A second was entitled “The Story of Stuff”, led by Annie Leonard. Annie showed her 20-minute video entitled “The Story of Stuff” and talked with participants about the huge number of environmental and social issues which arise from the extraction, sale, use and disposal of the things we use each day. Stacy Keneally led the third workshop, “Green Faith”. Green Faith is an interfaith coalition for the environment founded in 1992 which builds programs around three core values: spirit, justice and stewardship. Stacy urged participants to form a Green Team, then look for quick successes and communicate those successes to build support for the long term.
