Report from The Committee on Mission Priorities and Stewardship
Spring 2005
This year has brought a new focus for the Mission Priorities and Stewardship Committee. There has been much enthusiasm on the part of the members for the new area of focus and potential projects and responsibilities for the committee. Some of these include:
- Ministry and Mission Interpreters
- Itinerating visiting missionaries
- Being a conduit for Local Churches, Associations, NY Conference and National to share mission ideas/information
- Being an information source for ecumenical, interfaith, and denominational mission projects that may be of interest in the local congregations.
- Possibly being a committee conduit for the NY Conference Emergency Response Plan… (There is a local member who has been named as the Metro \ Association contact --- Terry McKnight?)
A first project of the committee is to create a cumulative list of the mission projects in place in the local congregations. Each church will be contacted to get a list of specific projects and if there is a lay-person contact for mission work.
Mission Project listing and additional contact person
- Adrienne Brockway: Westchester , Manhattan
- Geraldine Dudley: Nassau
- Peg Mainusch: Queens, Bronx
- Mary Dewar: Brooklyn ; Staten Island
Initial work was done in creating a description for the work of the committee.
The Mission Priorities and Stewardship Committee is a standing committee within the Metro Association of NY Conference UCC that promotes a commitment to mission --- local, regional and global --- and helps local congregations enrich their own individual mission work by sharing experience and resources available with other congregations of the Metro Association as each celebrates its unique ways of understanding “mission” in the local churches and beyond.
The committee will:
- Act as a coordinating/hosting team for visiting missionaries
- Be a local conduit for the NY Conference Commission on Global Church
- Be an information source for local churches looking for mission projects (such as walks, clothing drives, grass roots projects, etc.)
- Provide a local resource for information and MMI's (Ministries and Mission Interpreters) as being proposed by UCC (national office).
- Develop and implement short-term Association-wide mission project that focuses attention on global areas and needs as raised in the association.
