We have spent most of our time in preparation for the Martin Luther King Celebration in January 2005. This year we moved from the traditional Monday Celebration to Sunday afternoon, January 16, 2005 . Rev. Wilmot Taylor and the membership of Flatbush Tompkins Congregational Church, Brooklyn , played a major role in the success of our King Celebration. Our liaison to the Church was Sylvia White and all of our requests were fulfilled.
"From Civil Rights to Human Rights" was our theme and our speakers: Dr. Traci West, Associate Professor of Ethics and African American Religion, Drew University , and Rev Alphonso Wyatt, Associate Minister, The Greater All Cathedral.
Our Workshops:
- Domestic Violence, Sally MacNichol, CONNECT
- Shelter for Homeless LGBT Youth, Ali Forney Center, Carl Siciliano, Executive Director, Karen Senecal, Minister, Judson Memorial Church, NYC
- Poverty, Just Neighbors, Family Promise Organization, Geoffrey Black
- Homeless, Picture the Homeless, Civil Rights Committee
- Religious Liberty and Separation of Church and State, Interfaith Alliance , Mark Lukens
Gospel musical selections were provided by the powerful Jerriefe Johnson East Village Gospel Choir under the leadership of Freeman Palmer.
There were approximately 120 persons in attendance and the evaluations were very positive.
This year we collected an offering designated for the Tsunami Relief of $961.00; Geoffrey Black provided the additional funds to make $1,000.00.
The Committee on the Church and the Metropolitan Community will meet in April to evaluate the 2005 King Celebration and to decide whether to schedule the 2006 Celebration on Sunday or Monday.
Thanks to Lucy Werner, photos of the King Celebration are included on our Website.
