God Is Still Speaking,

Yes, that is a comma - a comma borrowed from Gracie Allen who said, "Do not put a period where God has put a comma."

Conference Minister Geoffrey Black and John Werner wore their Still Speaking shirts and cap Michael Caine, Southeast Regional Conference Minister, led us in thinking about how our local churches might participate in the nation-wide program which uses "God is Still Speaking," as the focal point for our distinctive calling in the world. (Pictured here are John Werner and Geoffrey Black in their Still Speaking shirts and cap.)

Although "God is Still Speaking," materials are available now, and www.stillspeaking.com welcomes all who would visit it, the current focus is on a nation-wide TV campaign that will launch on November 15 and run through Christmas if we can raise sufficient funds.

God is Still Speaking, commercials were aired in six major TV markets in spring 2004. The results were exciting. As Ron Buford of The Still Speaking Initiative reported, "We reached more people who felt alienated from God and from the church than we ever thought possible." He cites what he calls a typical e-mail:

Just found the church by me and went to service yesterday. I found a home! Thank you for the enlightened thinking and thank you for the great commercials that brought me to the church.

The four steps to become involved in the TV campaign are these:

  1. Contact the UCC national offices by June 30, 2004 to say "we want to participate". You may do this by e-mailing stillspeaking@ucc.org or calling Megan Hoelle at 216-736-2188.
  2. Send a leadership team to a one-day training session near your local church. Dates will be between June and December 2004 and will be announced on this web site.
  3. Form a "hospitality committee" (or whatever you choose to call your group) to plan and implement activities that will enhance your congregation's profile in your community. Talk about the commercials with friends, neighbors and other members. Organize welcoming events for newcomers.
  4. Save the Date for a Reformation Day worship event in our area on Sunday, November 7, the week before the commercials will air. Information about the events in the Metro and Suffolk Associations will be on this web site.

Also, if your congregation does not have a web site, the national offices will help create a web page for your church. You must have a web page and have attended a training event to be listed as a participating congregation on the national web site, www.ucc.org. It is to ucc.org that the commercials will point interested persons to "find a church". You may contact the national office by e-mailing stillspeaking@ucc.org or calling Megan Hoelle at 216-736-2188.
